Turn Your Own Clothes Into Pin Up Clothes
Chances are, if you are a fan of the retro look, you have already bought items of clothing that have an air of the 1950s pin up. It is a classic look that is sexy without revealing much of anything and really knows how to highlight the best parts of a woman's body. To make your clothes a bit more like actual pin up clothes, to give them a bit more touch of vavoom–without looking like a costume, there are several things you can do.
Looking costume-y is the antithesis of the goal when wearing retro clothes. You want to look comfortable and natural in them. Wear modern pieces that CAN be dressed up to be retro, but are not inherently so. The more comfortable you get with the look, the more accessories you can add. You want it to be taken seriously as a fun, flirty fashion statement. The last thing you want is for your reputation to suffer if you are too sexy or too outrageous.
Black, navy, white, and red are the colors to pick above all others. They are simple, yet striking colors that look good on just about anyone. The era was about letting the silhouette, not the color, speak. You have to wear the clothes–do not let the clothes wear you. Silk or lace is about as fancy as you need to get. Sparkles and busy prints are too much for this type of look.
The modern pin-up, or the center fold, is not the look you are going for. You want to be sexy, but above all you want to be subtle. It leaves far more to the imagination. You should wear things appropriate for the office and for your personal time. Skirts should always hit the knee and never be above or below. A pencil skirt is extremely professional, but since it is so sculpted, it has the potential to be very sexy.
Sweaters should be simple, fitted to your arms and torso, and end at your natural waist line (or go a little bit longer, just so your stomach is not exposed). Jewelry should be minimal. A strand of pearls or a nice set of earrings are all you need for your pin up clothes. There are plenty of modern options for this style.
Dresses are where you can reign a little bit more freely and devote a bit more toward the period of the clothes. Focus on the hourglass figure. Make sure the top is very well fitted and perhaps include a wide belt to accentuate the narrowest part of your waist. Dresses should still end at the knee. A-line skirts a great and light for summer parties, too.
Accessories are really where you can set the tone for your look. Start out with just a few and, once you gain some good perspective on the look, you might want to go a little bit further. Nice lingerie from the period can be worn under your clothes to make you aware of your flirty side. Wear nylons with lines up the back or get a garter belt with nylons you clip on.
Short scarves tied around the neck are another good retro homage. If you wear lipstick, make sure it is a flattering red. Wear gloves and little hats when you can. Remember to be lady-like. That is what is sexy. Betty Grable's pin up picture is the world's most famous because she only shows the backs of her legs. She is not a come-hither siren, but rather a fun-loving, healthy, happy, modest lady.
