The History Of Dramatic Eye Makeup
Facial make up has been around for a long time. There is evidence of it in some old books of Asia and Africa. It would not be strange if one were to find out that even in pre-historic days people were using make up. But the actual archeological evidence of make up was discovered in Egypt.
As far back as 3500 B.C the pharaohs were using both eye enhancing make up and also perfumes. In those days both men and women applied make up. Not surprisingly ancient Greeks, Jews and Romans took up the use of cosmetics in their daily lives. There are specific accounts in the Old Testament where make up was used to enhance the looks of the eyes.
But as far as rest of Europe goes is was not until the 15-16th century where beauty enhancing products became fashionable. It was mainly used by the aristocracy and the wealthy. But it did not receive the blessings of the church, basically the church discouraged the use of it. Later on we see different attitudes towards make up in general, until of course with the arrival of the 20th century. Before that unless ones profession was an actor or prostitution using make up was frowned upon.
The attitude towards cosmetics did not change until well into the 20th century. There was a time when the understanding of the products used to make cosmetics were very poor, there was wide spread used of toxic products like lead and mercury. Predictably the use of such products often leads to customers to become sick. But starting in the middle of 20th century cosmetics, like food, became heavily regulated and the use of such toxins was stopped.
These days cosmetics are a multibillion dollar industry. The use of cosmetics in America and abroad grew at an astounding rate. Not only did it become popular with older ladies to hide their age, but also with young girls to enhance their looks. The dramatic eye make up started in the 1960s by these ladies to make their eyes look bigger. In this day and age there is a much better understanding as to how to use such make up to enhance ones eyes and beauty.
